Burgers from The Triple XXX Family Restaurant in Indiana

triple xxx family restaurant burgers

On Purdue’s campus there lives a small diner in a building that doesn’t appear to have been updated since the 50’s. This diner, known as The Triple XXX Family Restaurant, is home to one of the best burgers I’ve had in a while. Despite the name of the restaurant, there are no topless dancers or stripper poles coming between you and your food, just one long countertop that weaves its way through the restaurant, where barely a seat lay empty.

Upon looking at the menu, and looking around the restaurant, it was obvious that the only thing worth eating here was the burgers. They have a few specialty burgers that come with stuff like peanut butter, but I’m a simple guy so I just wanted a simple burger, and when I didn’t see just a cheeseburger on the menu, I was a little worried. But never fear, it was only because they call them “steak” that I didn’t see it, there is definitely a Double Steak w/ Cheese on the menu. So just think of it as Steak N Shake… it says steak, but it really means burger.

Nick and Iman both ordered one of the speciality burgers (the name of which I can’t recall right now), and I went with the Double Steak w/ Cheese. The burgers are griddle burgers, not your thicker restaurant burgers, which pleased me, because griddle burgers are the kind I love. The burgers came out and they were just dripping with awesomeness… otherwise known as cheese. I couldn’t even see any burger meat underneath all of the cheese there was so much gooey heaven on the bun. Without thinking twice I dove right in and was immediately rewarded for my impatience with a blast of deliciousness I wasn’t expecting.  Even through all of the cheese you could still taste the delicious burger with it’s perfect griddle “crust” to it.

I’m pretty sure all of us devoured every last bit of the burger before jumping back in the car to finish our trek down to Nashville for Pat’s bachelor party, and surprisingly the burger didn’t sit too heavy and we didn’t really have to make any emergency pit stops the remainder of the trip. I think the tiny crack rocks they put in the burgers must have some glorious effect on your stomach that makes something that cheesy and greasy sit well after eating.

I don’t normally gush about food on this blog since the whole point of it is that I hate food, but this burger was just that good; way better than the burger from Holy Grale’s “Farm-to-Table” burger we had in Louisville on the way home. It was a good burger, but I’m not a fan of those fancy types of burgers. But back to The Triple XXX Family Restaurant Steak Burger, do yourself a favor and make your way over there to try one, I might even consider a 2-hour drive day trip to try it again, it was that good. In fact, most of the food we had last weekend in, and on the way to, Nashville was good, so keep an eye out for another post about Chicken Fried Chicken!

I'm a married man in his 30's who doesn't really "like" food. If it weren't for my wife I would be living off of pizza and cheeseburgers for the rest of my life. Follow me as I venture slightly out of my comfort zone to try different foods and restaurants.
